Original Question

The unpredictable nature of healthcare leads to healthcare organizations that must function as complex adaptive systems (CAS). Challenges continuously arise in healthcare, and healthcare organizations must adapt. The Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) where I work has encountered innumerable challenges as the community and its health conditions have changed over the decades since it was established. The components (departments and staff) have needed to adapt in unpredictable ways. An organization that continues to build out of problem reactivity without interacting with the system’s feedback loop will begin to lose its cohesiveness. These multiple interacting feedback loops between the components of a system foster adaptations, positive or negative, and change the nature of an organization from simple to complex. (Merali & Allen, 2011). A healthcare organization that functions productively has components that adapt to changes not only within their own department but as feedback reactions to changes within the other departments in the organization. The FQHC has made changes within departments and added several new departments, and the connections between departments need reworking as challenges arise. Maintaining that cohesive system has not always happened. Within this system, change results
