An EHR I have experience working with is Epic. I have used Epic in the inpatient setting on a medical stepdown unit and currently use Epic in the ambulatory setting now. There are significant differences between the two. Some key features of Epic that support organizational outcomes are the options to customize or personalize the view. This customization allows you to group visits by time, visit type, and or provider. This comes in handy for organization purposes. Secondly, Epic allows you to place administrative reminders or notes in the chart as “sticky notes.” This option is very helpful when used as reminders. There are two options for the sicky notes, one option; only the user who placed the memo can see it and the other option allows other users to see the memo when they access the chart. These notes are not part of the medical record. Lastly, a key feature that supports positive client outcomes is the option to access their chart online. Epic allows patient to have access via the MyChart application. On the application patients can view and share records, manage appts, message their providers and much more. A concern with the system that is specific to the organization is when results are released to the patient prior to the provider being able to review the results. At times this causes confusion and anxiety for the patients.
