I think one of thr most important components of understanding EHR and PHI is having a solid understanding of HIPAA. Knowing what is covered under HIPAA, the guidelines for disclosing information, and what happens with a breech of PHI is key to safeguarding patient information. Another thing I think is very important, however I am not sure if it just pertains to EPIC or not, is “hard stops.” recognizing hard stops, knowing what to do when they appear, and taking the proper steps following makes navigating an EHR easier. A hard stop appears when a certain patient information is needed, or when actions are being performed in a patients chart. The hard stop does exactly that, it stops you. You cannot go any foether until you read and acknowledge thr hard stop, or fill in the information tnsy is missing. Hard stops, while they can seem tedious when you are trying to move through a patients encounter, are incredibly beneficial. For example, if you are registering a patient, a hard stop will appear asking if this encounter is related to works compensation or a third party liability. Having this information deems who the guarantor is for the encounter and who will be responsible for charges. If this information is incorrect, or missing, a claim may be denied for being billed to the wrong responsible party.
