Key Explanation

This topic involves environmental justice means. A strong answer should include explanation, application, and examples.

Original Question

Environmental Justice means that “everyone – regardless of race, color, national origin, or income – has the right to the same environmental protections and benefits, as well as meaningful involvement in policies that shape their communities” (Renee Skelton, 2023). Environmental issues usually are targeted towards those who come from a low income family or uninsured families whose access to care and cleaner environments is limited. Access to clean water is a wide issue within low income communities resulting in multiple health issues due to the elements within the water. This is an environmental justice because those areas that are most affected are those with limited materials and access to clean water because of where they live. One region in particular in Arizona where contaminated water levels are the highest is within the grand canyon region due to the level of arsenic within the water (Elevated arsenic in Grand Canyon region groundwater sites likely from natural sources: U.S. Geological Survey). The minimal level of safety for drinking water is regulated by the EPA. It is stated that chemical contaminants that are carcinogens may cause cancer and that no dose is considered safe and that the microbial contaminant level is set at zero because drinking water containing a virus, bacteria, or protozoan can cause a decrease in the health of the individual (2024). There is no level of contaminants in water that are safe for drinking as any level of contaminant causes adverse health reactions. One prevention available to all individuals is the safe drinking water act which establishes the standard drinking water for multiple contaminants, this decided what the level of contamination is acceptable to continue to drink without causing harm to the individuals health (Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) 2024). The Safe Drinking Water Act (2024) states that 92% of individuals are supplied with safe drinking water within their communities. A pro of this prevention is that it is able to scan through contaminants and identify those that are harmful to individuals. A con to the Safe Drinking Water Act is that it does not address 100% of communities so there are still individuals out there that are drinking contaminated water. Another prevention strategy that would help keep the drinking water clean is to not dump hazardous material into the ground such as motor oil, pesticides, cleaners, and medicines (Easy Things You Can Do To Protect Drinking Water Sources 2024). Without overuse of pesticides and fertilizers an individual can keep the ground pure which in some communities can directly affect the water in which they drink. Keeping the environment healthy will allow for less contaminants within the water and soil which relate to not only the water individuals drink but also the food that individuals consume and grow on their own. A pro of this prevention is that it will keep the environment clean which directly relates to what an individual consumes as in some communities the water they drink comes from wells or rivers because it is their only option. A huge con to this prevention though is that the action of keeping the environment clean is up to the individuals in the community themselves and taking responsibility for their actions in order to provide themselves with the clean drinking water they need.
