Original Question
Zachary is a 7-year- old black male who presents today with is dad for complaints of a rash on his left arm. He is well-developed, well-nourished and in no acute distress. He participates in hockey and is careful to wear protective pads and gloves. Over the past 3 weeks, dad reports he noticed a circular rash with Zachary complaining of increased itchiness. The school nurse suggested calamine lotion based on the thought the rash might be a contact dermatitis. Although the calamine did help with itching, there was no improvement in the overall appearance of the rash. In fact, the rash became red with mild spreading. At this point, the dad tried Cortisone cream that helped the redness but did not clear the rash. Today, the rash is noted to have blistered edges. Immunizations are -up-to-date, and there are no other illnesses reported for Zachary or his close contacts. Your diagnosis is Tinea Corporis.
