Unit 2: Skeletal System Question #15 – What are the risk factors associated with osteoporosis? Rickets? Osteoporosis is the most common type of bone disease, and it is a condition that causes bones to become weak. One risk factor of osteoporosis is age. As people grow older, their bones naturally become thinner. Another risk factor is a lack of calcium or protein in someone’s diet. Without a good amount of calcium in the blood vessels, osteoclasts take it from the bones. Over time, this causes bones to progressively get weaker and increase the chances of having a fracture. Rickets is another type of bone disease and it mostly affects children by causing their bones to become soft. This condition is mainly caused by vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate deficiencies. Some risk factors include too much time spent indoors, lactose intolerance, celiac disease, and being on a vegan diet. Respond to the submissions in detail, not just “I agree”. replies must be at least 50 w o r d s (this is approximately 3 complete sentences) replies can include extra information that your peer may have forgotten, AND/OR a restatement of their answer using your own words or examples.
