Original Question

Crystal- Auditory Verbal Therapy Evaluation Crystal is a 38-year-old who presents with genetic, bilateral, sensorineural hearing loss. Crystal was diagnosed with hearing loss at age 10, but she did not start wearing hearing aids until she was 20 years old. She participated in the regular education setting with no accommodations or modifications. She hid her hearing loss and did not tell her teachers. She obtained a bachelor’s degree and did some graduate work without any assistance for her hearing loss. Crystal’s father, paternal uncle, and paternal aunt have cochlear implants. Additionally, Crystal is married with three children, one of whom is exhibiting some signs of hearing loss. Crystal’s evaluation is unique in that she does not wear hearing aids at this point due to a lack of perceived benefit. In this video, Crystal participates in an initial evaluation with an auditory-verbal therapist (AVT) prior to receiving bilateral cochlear implants. Due to Crystal experiencing difficulty lipreading on the date of the evaluation, the AVT requested that Crystal’s husband participate in the evaluation to assist with communication. The practitioner used the chat function of the telehealth platform to communicate directly with Crystal and her husband.
