reply to this discussion Hi everyone! I chose to describe microallocation and to discuss the different views from both Paul Ramsey and James Childress, then which approach is more favorable and why. Microallocation decisions involve bedside decisions about whether an individual patient will or will not receive a scarce medical resource. (Scheunemann & White, 2011) Microallocation involves making very important decisions for the patient. Usually a physician will be in favor of providing the care needed to those that will potentially have a better outcome if treated versus patients who may die or not recover as quickly or efficiently as the others. As we read in chapter 13, the medical team had differing opinions of which patients would receive penicillin: the wounded or ones that had venereal disease. (Darr, 2011) Childress’s approach on microallocation was described as patients being able to all receive the same treatment as everyone else, even if they were not able to be fully functional in society after treatment. It did not matter to him, he believed that all human beings deserved the best treatment possible.(Darr, 2011) Although Ramsey agreed with Childress, Ramsey thought that it was important to understand that certain people should be excluded certain treatments. For example, an eight year old should not qualify for a kidney organ donation or dialysis before an otherwise healthy twenty-five year old.
