What is one additional ethical or legal issue that your peer’s role may encounter? What additional knowledge, skills, work experience and/or education would assist with better preparing your peer for their assigned role? Public health nurses face unique challenges that are related to both their broad scope of practice and the population-level impact of their work. These issues span beyond just medicine, and include legal and ethical challenges which make this a difficult field to be in. First, public health nurses face challenges with patient confidentiality as they must balance the need to share data for the purpose of population health, such as disease tracking, with upholding HIPAA. Public health nurses also have legal obligations to report cases of abuse and neglect and may face ethical dilemmas where they battle between the legality of mandatory reporting and maintaining community trust where it is fragile (Borsay, 2021). They also face other challenges such as navigating cultural differences while providing equitable care and also facing ethical decisions about allocating limited resources among populations in underserved areas (National Academy of Medicine, 2022). In order to be prepared for these challenges, I aim to hone my communication and advocacy skills so I can best educate communities. I would also strengthen my leadership and teamwork skills so I can better work with interprofessional teams to best serve communities in need. Participating in community outreach programs or health screenings as a nursing student could help me gain experience in this field that would help me overcome some of the aforementioned challenges. Finally, seeking mentorship from other public health nurses will help me gain insight and guidance to help make a lasting impact on community health.
