Hearing is based on the process of vibrations that are in the air entering the ear canal and being converted to sound waves then sent to the brain for interpretation as sound itself. Amazing how each system of our body’s have a job right? The anatomy of the ear is more complicated can that sounds. There are many parts to the ear itself. It is broken into three parts which all have their own little pieces and functions. I will give a brief description to highlight the main parts. As mentioned above, the ear consists of three parts which are the Outer ear, Middle ear, Inner ear. The outer ear is the visual aspect of the ear containing the auricle responsible for guiding sound waves into the ear canal causing vibration in the eardrum and sound amplification. The middle ear contains the eardrum responsible for further amplifying the sounds and sending them to the Eustachian tubes to equalize the pressure of the air outside and in the ear. The inner ear contains the cochlea which is filled with fluid that receives the sound waves and initiates nerve impulses that travel to the brain to interpret the signals into sounds. I personally struggle with the loss of hearing in my left ear due to a unsuccessful middle ear surgery. It was incredibly hard to adjust to initially because it seemed like everything was so hard to hear even with one ear. I quickly utilized my eyes to read lips especially with soft spoken people. In an emergent situation, a “code blue” was initiated over the intercom. I only heard “code blue” but not the location. Of course I still gathered the equipment at my disposal and utilized other staff to reiterate where the code blue was however this took time because on night shift, staff is scarce so I had to first find someone who heard the alert to tell me where it was. Once I finally arrived and joined, I found myself using my eyes as a directive more than my ears. At times, this took up time because I could not hear what was being said during this ordeal. The advantage in it was being able to use my eyes to watch everything but the disadvantage caused poor timing in delivery of skill. Adapting to hearing loss in one ear isn’t horrible but some dats are also worse than others. The middle ear also contains a vestibular organ responsible for balance so some days I can be extremely off balance and dizzy while other days I am not affected. Another advantage of the decreased hearing for me is that I used to wake myself up because I snore so loudly, I’ve noticed I don’t even hear myself snore anymore since my left ear is affected and I sleep on my right ear and not even wake myself up throughout the night.
